Paris Eternal Release DPS Naga

Paris Eternal make changes to its Overwatch roster
by Tit Krajnik on May 15, 2022

Paris Eternal announced the departure of DPS player Nikolai “Naga” Dereli, who left the French Overwatch team on Saturday, May 14. The news follows Eternal’s poor start to the season, going 0-2 in the first round of the 2022 Overwatch League (OWL).

Naga’s departure from the team ends an 18-month long tenure with the French esports organization. The Danish professional Overwatch player joined Paris Eternal in December 2020 as a part of a significant roster rebuild which Eternal started following a disappointing 14th-place finish in the 2019 OWL season.

During his stay at Paris Eternal, Naga has emerged as one of the team’s most consistent players, albeit he failed to help Eternal win anything notable in the 2021 season.

Nevertheless, the move has left many OWL fans and other pro players confused, and it didn’t help that Naga revealed that his departure was the team’s choice and hot his own. Still, the 21-year-old accepted the decision claiming that Eternal should do what they think is the best for the team.

With Naga’s departure, Paris Eternal now field a six-man roster after the team signed DPS player Cameron “Wub” Johnson earlier this week. So it seems like Eternal were preparing for this change, but it remains to be seen whether the French esports organization will make any more changes.

As for Naga, his future in the OWL remains a mystery. But considering his recognition as one of Eternal’s best players, he likely won’t have a difficult time finding a new team to compete with.

Naga started his OWL career in 2016 and has since played for numerous squads and even made two appearances in the Danish national team at the 2018 and 2019 Overwatch World Cup. During his time competing in Overwatch Contenders, Naga has emerged as one of the most promising young talents, which earned him a contract in the OWL for the 2021 season.

But unfortunately, the Dane couldn’t help Paris Eternal win a single tournament. The team’s most notable achievement in 2021 was a top-four finish at SteelSeries Invitational, as the team couldn’t win a single OWL event by the end of the season and crashed out of the western OWL Play-In stage in fifth-sixth place.

Even this year, Paris Eternal failed to find any traction, losing their opening two series against San Francisco Shock (0-3) and Florida Mayhem (1-3), meaning that the organization enters the second week of the season with a 0-2 series record and a 1-6 match record.

Whether the departure of Naga and the arrival of Wub will help Paris Eternal bounce back remains to be seen. But we should get a clearer answer on Sunday when Eternal debuts their new roster against the Toronto Defiant.
