Insomniac Games Pledges $50,000 to Pro-Choice Organization

Sony plans to match the donation.

Sony Acquires Insomniac Games

In an internal meeting sent out to associates on May 13, Insomniac Games, a part of Playstation Studios, announced that they plan to donate $50,000 to the Women’s Reproductive Rights Assistance Project for employees who need to travel in order to obtain abortion procedures. This is in direct response to the latest conversation revolving around the plan to revert Roe vs. Wade; making it dangerous for women to obtain safe and necessary abortions regardless of the situation. Sony plans to match the donation to make it an even $100,000 though the same correspondence announced that neither company would like to publicize their donations. The information comes from an article written by The Washington Post that further details this information.

This is rather interesting news as I believe that the organizations could publicly benefit from involving themselves in the conversation. Many organizations do not talk about their stance on the issue which makes it so that many of their associates feel compelled also not to share their opinions for fear of negative consequences. Both Sony and Insomniac Games employ women who will undoubtedly need to undergo these procedures which is the reason why they decided to make this donation. Considering that, they should proudly display their donation and begin this conversation in an industry where so many topics have genuinely thoughtful opinions attached to them.

This news comes almost a week after Playstation CEO Jim Ryan sent out an email encouraging employees to respect differing opinions regarding Roe vs Wade, not really making a comment on the issue. Insomnia Games CEO Ted Price verified this information in a correspondence with staff and stated that Sony,

“will not approve ANY statements from any studio on the topic of reproductive rights. We fought hard for this and we did not win.”
