The Last of Us Remake Could Release Later This Year

The remake is reportedly nearly finished
by Joe Wilcock on May 18, 2022

The rumour-mill surrounding the eagerly anticipated The Last of Us remake has been fierce as of late. Ever since Bloomberg reported on its apparent production back in early 2021, fans have had little to feed on, never mind that it’s not actually been formally announced. Regardless, the industry is not only convinced of its existence, but recent rumours indicate that development is nearing completion and it could be heading for a release “this holiday”.

Industry insider, Tom Henderson, and GamesBeat reporter, Jeff Grubb, seem to believe that all signs point towards a 2022 release and they are seldom wrong on these matters. Add to this, recent job listings scouting for applicants with “an appetite for high-quality, 3rd person, action/adventure games” and the rumours become more than mere speculation.

The Last of Us was originally released back in 2013 as a last swan song for the PlayStation 3 and has since become nothing short of iconic. It would be a hard task to find anyone who would deny its class and significance. Its sequel was released 7 years later in 2020 to much controversy due to the narrative decisions that Naughty Dog, or more specifically Neil Druckmann, made in the follow-up. Despite this, the gameplay was undoubtedly much improved and it innovated on many fronts.

One would think that a remake of the original would be a perfect blend of the two: Flawless storytelling and compelling gameplay.

To clarify, until Naughty Dog officially announce the remake, all news remains unconfirmed and up for debate. However, there is much credibility and clout behind many of the rumours heard thus far.
