Netherlands and Belgium Lootbox Laws Prohibit the Sale of Diablo: Immortal

The upcoming MMO will be illegal to download in both countries
by Joe Wilcock on May 31, 2022

The announcement of Diablo: Immortal during the 2018 BlizzCon went down like a led balloon. Infamy and ridicule have surrounded the upcoming MMO ever since and it seems as though their misery will continue. The new Diablo title will now be banned in two countries for the very same reason fans were apprehensive about the reveal in the first place. As Blizzard gear up to release the game in an open beta later this week, it was discovered that it has been pulled from the Netherlands and Belgian App Store and Google Play due to the inclusion of loot boxes.

Both countries have much less tolerance for the cancerous concept of loot boxes than most as they bring with them gambling tendencies and habits which are dangerous for children or any gamers with gambling addictions. Belgium even went so far as to outlaw Overwatch's and Heroes of the Storm's paid loot boxes forcing Blizzard to remove them from their games in that country.

A community post from Blizzard Support shed some light on the matter through Reddit:

"Unfortunately players in the Netherlands and Belgium will not be able to install Diablo Immortal due to the countries' gambling restrictions. The loot boxes in the game are against the law in your country, so unless gambling restrictions change the game will not be released in the Netherlands and Belgium."

- Gamemaster Gronnfindel, Blizzard Support

Needless to say, it is illegal to download Diablo: Immortal in both countries and if players somehow manage to get hold of the game, they could be subject to an imminent ban as part of their gambling restriction laws.

These two countries, along with a few others (including the UK), have paved the way for the redemption of the industry showing that gambling has no part to play in our beloved games outside of contextual simulation.

Diablo: Immortal will launch on 2nd June on iOS, Android and PC.
