Fallout 5 to Launch After Elder Scrolls 6, Bethesda Confirms

Bethesda confirms this news to IGN
by Joe Wilcock on June 15, 2022

Bethesda’s production pipeline is no secret. Since Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which was released in 2006, Bethesda game studios have alternated between the Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises.

However, unlike Rockstar who exclusively trades off between GTA and Red Dead Redemption these days, Bethesda has subsidiary companies to fill in the blanks. Developers such as Arkane, id Software and Tango Gameworks ensure that games like Dishonoured, Prey and Doom are produced under Bethesda’s banner.

As brilliant as these other games may be, most fans are forever waiting for the newest Elder Scrolls or Fallout sequel. The former was confirmed back at 2018’s E3 alongside Starfield, which has taken precedence since. Both Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield felt an eternity away when they were announced, but after seeing gameplay for Starfield in this year's Summer Games Fest at the Microsoft + Bethesda conference it finally looks as though their plans are coming to fruition.

As Starfield received a release date (early 2023), Todd Howard revealed the next era of Bethesda’s long roadmap to IGN:

"Yes, Elder Scrolls 6 is in pre-production and, you know, we’re going to be doing Fallout 5 after that, so our slate’s pretty full going forward for a while. We have some other projects that we look at from time to time as well."

- Bethesda Director and Executive Producer, Todd Howard

As mentioned, Bethesda has bounced between these iconic franchises since Oblivion, but the development cycle of both grow increasingly longer. Oblivion and Fallout 3 were released in 2006 and 2008 respectively, just two years apart from one another. Skyrim and Fallout 4 followed a similar pattern with The Elder Scrolls V releasing in 2013 and Fallout 4 in 2015, once again just 2 years apart.

Fallout 76 and Starfield have blown that trajectory out of the water, prompting Todd Howard to comment on the long waits.

"They do take a while. I wish they came out faster, I really do, we’re trying as hard as we can, but we want them to be as best as they can be for everybody."

- Bethesda Director and Executive Producer, Todd Howard

Fans only have a confirmation, a logo and some mountains to feed off for Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 has little more than a basic premise and a setting. Regardless of the mystery surrounding these upcoming titles, Todd Howard has still managed to billow the fires of excitement. What we know for certain is that The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 won't see the light of day for at least 6+ years. Bethesda games take longer than most in the oven but are more often than not well worth the wait.
