Bioshock 4 Will Feature an “immersive sandbox world"

A recent job listing suggests an open world and evolved combat system
by Joe Wilcock on June 28, 2022

It’s no secret that the next Bioshock game is currently in development. 2K and Cloud Chambers have taken over the responsibility from Irrational Games and are tasked with creating the next entry in the iconic franchise. Details are still scarce on the project, but fans eagerly anticipate the most important piece of information that could make or break the title: the setting.

Abiding by the Bioshock mantra: there is always a lighthouse, there’s always a man, there’s always a city. The importance of the latter can not be overstated, given that the Bioshock franchise has already provided us with two of the most unique locations in all of gaming.

Rapture and Columbia are both beautifully realised environments ripe with detail and intrigue. Although the first two Bioshock games allow backtracking, all three entries in the series are, for the most part, quite linear in nature. Bioshock 4 looks to be a departure from that formulae.

Recent job listings on Cloud Chamber’s website indicate that Bioshock 4 could be set in an “immersive sandbox world”. Including within the Lead Combat Designers job details, it states that they’re looking for someone that can “manage a team of designers entrusted with implementing combat gameplay content in an immersive sandbox world?“.

It continues to hint towards a revamped combat system too. Bioshock’s combat has always had two pillars: gunplay and powers (either plasmids or vigors) but the sequels want to “develop an FPS combat paradigm that is accessible, satisfying, and allows for a high degree of player expression and experimentation within a highly reactive world.”

Cloud Chamber certainly have big boots to fill, but if these job listings are anything to go by, it seems as though they’re trying to push the series into innovative territory. Although Bioshock 4 has not been officially unveiled, Cloud Chamber’s website confirms that they are working on the next entry, with Bioshock veterans included in the project:

“Cloud Chamber is hard at work on the next entry in the critically acclaimed BioShock series. Our team consists of veteran BioShock developers and expert game makers from other mind-blowing titles, and together we’re going to create worlds that you’ll want to experience.”
