Niantic Struggles to Keep Up After Pokémon Go

They've undergone layoffs and even cancelled four games recently.

Pokémon Go passes $6B in lifetime player spending | VentureBeat

Niantic is incredibly well known for its world-changing game, Pokémon Go. The game took almost every country by storm as it had players who weren't even familiar with games traveling with friends to battle gym leaders and catch Pokémon. However, according to a recent Bloomberg post, CEO John Hanke has announced that 8% of the staff was being laid off which equates to about 85-90 employees total. He explained that this was due to the fact that they are facing a time of economic turmoil and that they needed to be "reducing costs in a variety of areas." In addition to this, four projects have also been canceled. One of these projects was the mobile AR partnership with Hasbro titled Transformers: Heavy Metal. The second project was a collaboration with theatre production company Peachdrunk while the last two projects were simply codenamed Blue Sky and Snowball.

It seems that none of the games that were released after the success of Pokémon Go even managed to do a fraction of the same numbers. In fact, their second most successful IP was Harry Potter: Wizards Unite which allowed players to make their own character and interact with the world of Harry Potter through AR. Another popular title of theirs, Pikmin Bloom has done the worst of them all even though it still remains active. Though, considering the above information, the might not last very long.

Unfortunately, no other location-based game has managed to gather the same kind of attention as Pokémon Go, not even from the developers themselves. That being said, it puts the company in an incredibly awkward position since the game has garnered about $6 billion in lifetime revenue. Hopefully, we will hear more information about how the company plans to combat this situation but for now, we will just need to see how things play out.
