AYM Esports Will Replace Team Empire At ALGS Championship

AYM Esports step in for Team Empire
by Tit Krajnik on June 30, 2022

AYM Esports will replace Team Empire at Apex Legends Global Series Championship, the tournament organizers announced on Wednesday, June 29. AYM Esports was added to the lineup for the Major due to Team Empire's visa issues which prevented the Russian squad from traveling to the United States.

After Team Empire revealed that the team would not be able to travel to Raleigh for the Apex Legends tournament, there were some questions about how will the tournament organizers approach the issue. Although it was initially believed that the ALGS 2022 Championship would continue with 39 teams and a slightly altered format, the tournament organizers found an alternative solution.

In such situations, tournament organizers usually add a replacement team based on the playoffs points from the regular season, but that plan did not come through. Flora Esports, the next-highest rated team, was unable to replace Empire since the team did not qualify for Split 2 Playoffs and would likely miss the tournament.

So instead, the tournament organizers choose AYM Esports (former K1CK roster) as the second-highest team from EMEA. Initially, this plan seemed like it wouldn't work out because AYM also features a Russian player (Svyatoslav "ojrein" Korochinsky), suggesting that ALGS Championship would play out with 39 teams, but that wasn't the case.

Despite the visa concerns, AYM Esports managed to get their team to Raleigh, albeit with Nils "Gerovic12" Bode serving as a replacement for ojrein.

Interestingly, according to the AYM Esports manager, the roster was getting ready to step in as a replacement team even before the team got signed by AYM last week and have applied for travel visas long ago. Moreover, the squad made sure that Gerovic12 would be available to step in if the team needed to attend the ALGS Championship on short notice.

Careful planning has now earned AYM Esports a spot in the world's largest Apex Legends tournament, where they'll compete for the lion's share of the $2,000,000 prize pool. The tournament will kick off on Thursday, July 7, with the first round of the group stage.
