by Joe Wilcock on July 02, 2022

The BAFTA Young Game Designers Awards is an initiative that allows young people to express their ideas and showcase their talents to the world. The competition is split into four different categories spanning ages from 10-18.

As seen on the BAFTA YDG website, here are the results from the event:

Game Concept Award: 10-14 years old

Finalists:
Atelo, Cattaluna Caper, EcoWarriors, Spin Out, Super Babies: The Platform Game, The Lost Crystal Shards, The Virus, Tiled in Twilight, Umbrella Blast, Zerophobic

Winner:
Tiled in Twilight

Described as an “urban dystopian themed pixelated picross puzzle game, where you illuminate the past and the path to the truth”, Tiled in Twilight was conceptualised by 13 year old Jasmine Guan and won the award for best game concept (age 10-14).

Game Concept Award: 15-18 years old

Finalists:
Abyss of Dreams, Carrier Pigeon: World Tour, Escape, Escape the Engines, Managing Barry, Monster from the Maze, Showtime!, Slimescape, The Everglade Theory, Vellichor

Winner:
Carrier Pigeon: World Tour

Jamie Williams, 18, simply describes Carrier Pigeon as “an arcade game about exploration, community, and delivering mail. You will play as Lenny, a mail carrier pigeon from Seattle who, after having somewhat of an identity crisis, accepts a promotion from Local Mail Carrier to Worldwide Delivery Representative. This new adventure will take the player on a journey to not only 14 different locations around the world but also aims to take players on an emotional journey, accompanied by relaxing gameplay”.

This was enough to tip Williams’ concept ahead of the others in the 15-18 category.

Game Making Award: 10-14 years old

Finalists:
BOMB Pong, Clones, Demon Boy, Egglien, Eye Of The Portal, Frogs Way Home, Jungle Heist, Le nouveau jeu du singe (the monkey's game), Raider's Reprise, Unearthed

Winner:
Egglien

Created by Alfie Wilkinson, 14, Egglien is an interesting spin on the sci-fi alien genre, putting you in the shoes of the alien itself. “In Egglien you play as an alien trying to find her lost husband. Use alien eggs to fight your foes in this action platformer shooter.”

Wilkinson took the Game Making Award (age 10-14) for his efforts.

Game Making Award: 15-18 years old

Finalists:
Colour Coded, Day of Life, Deep Sea Scuttle, Fallen, Heavy Sword, Imagibot - Saves Eden Green, Paddles, Penguin Skedaddle, Robot Waiter, Space Boids

Winner:
Space Boids

Space Boids was created by Andrew Ah-Weng (age unknown) to win the Game Making Award (age 15-18).

In this game, you will “travel through a procedurally generated map, fighting enemies and upgrading your boids. At each enemy encounter, you fight waves of enemies and gain money to spend on upgrades and changing your loadout of boids. At the end of each run, you get a score to represent your progress throughout the game”.

Some of the aforementioned games are available to download and try out on their respective web link. It gives fans an insight into what could be a small part of the future of gaming.

Entries will be made available in November for the 2023 competition.
