Blizzard President Backs Diablo Immortal Micro-Transactions

Mike Ybarra speaks earnestly to the Los Angeles TimesĀ
by Joe Wilcock on July 12, 2022

Despite making more than 1 million dollars every day since its release on 2nd June, Blizzard's President is adamant that the “vast majority” of players don’t spend any money on the title and that micro-transactions in Immortal aren’t a problem. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Mike Ybarra revealed in depth the difficulty of taking over the company in such times of adversity and the philosophy behind Diablo Immortal’s monetisation.

“When we think about monetization, at the very highest level it was, ‘How do we give a free ‘Diablo’ experience to hundreds of millions of people, where they can literally do 99.5% of everything in the game?’

The monetization comes in at the end game. The philosophy was always to lead with great gameplay and make sure that hundreds of millions of people can go through the whole campaign without any costs. From that standpoint, I feel really good about it as an introduction to ‘Diablo.’”

- Mike Ybarra, Blizzard Entertainment President

Although Diablo Immortal has received overwhelmingly poor user reviews, gaming outlets and critics have all deemed it to be mediocre at best, but that hasn’t stopped the game from becoming a commercial success. Not only has the game secured more than 15 million downloads, but it has also somehow garnered a 4.5 rating on the App Store. This, to a layman, would lead you to believe that Immortal is a game worth playing and this is proven by Ybarra who says that 50% of the player base has never played a Blizzard game previously.

Ybarra also addressed the infamously toxic work culture at Blizzard and how exactly he plans on changing it:

“We have taken two or three key people who identify as women, across every team, and I meet monthly with them. We talk about what will make Blizzard great for women. We hope that employees recognize these changes, and people start feeling safer and more comfortable here.”

- Mike Ybarra, Blizzard Entertainment President

Diablo Immortal is available on iOS and Android for free.
