GTA VI Features First Female Protagonist and Will Be Set in Vice City

The first insight into Rockstar’s changing work culture
by Joe Wilcock on July 27, 2022

Rockstar has always been renowned for its controversy, social commentary, satire and of course, quality. Whilst these tenets remain at the forefront of their games, seldom do we see how the sausage is made as Rockstar tends to keep to themselves unless there is something worth sharing or releasing. Epitomized by their absence from major gaming events, Rockstar does things their own way. However, decades of being the unchecked dominant force in the industry have allowed for a toxic work culture to ferment. Barrera, the vice president of product development, came under massive scrutiny recently for his anger issues to give just one example. Here is what a former employee had to say about him:

"The dude was petty and had personal vendettas against people all the time, made work super uncomfortable. He had anger issues—yelling, throwing things. Say or do one ‘wrong’ thing in front of him and you could get fired on the spot. Laugh with him about something, you might get yelled at because he meant to be ‘serious.'"

In addition to the abysmal GTA trilogy remaster, aggressive monetization on GTA online and abandoning Red Dead Online just four years after its release, problems were starting to mount for the otherwise untouchable Rockstar. However, thanks to a conscious effort to reshape the culture at the company, they could be in the midst of correcting their course.

As reported by Bloomberg, recent political and social considerations indicate a more mature working ethos with the most poignant statement coming from an employee who described Rockstar as “a boys’ club transformed into a real company”. This is exemplified by removing the Cops ‘n’ Crooks mode in 2020 after the tragic death of George Floyd and excluding transphobic jokes from the most recent console releases of GTA V.

Unhappy to rest on their laurels, it has now been confirmed that GTA VI will feature its first-ever female protagonist. Inspired by Bonnie and Clyde, players will be able to assume the role of a Latina female who will presumably make up one of the three playable characters, if they plan on continuing the multi-character mechanic. Although this seems like the natural progression, as previous GTA titles have been surprisingly progressive in regards to diversity in the main characters, it's still a huge step for a company that could be construed as being massively misogynistic.

As for the setting, Bloomberg has revealed that Rockstar originally had plans to design a map that incorporated large sections of North and South America, code-named "Project Americas". However, Rockstar made the decision to reel in those ambitions to focus on a fictional Miami instead, with plans to update the game as time goes on. This will include Vice City and the surrounding areas.
