Bren Esports Founder Wanted For Drug Smuggling Case

A drug case that dates back to 2019
by Tit Krajnik on August 02, 2022

Entrepreneur and owner of a famous Southeast Asian esports organization, Bernard "Bren" Chong is wanted by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for his alleged involvement in a drug smuggling case.

Chong was tied to the botched smuggling of 1.87 billion Philippine pesos ($33.6 million) worth of shabu (methamphetamines) at the Manila International Container Port in 2019. The warrant for his arrest was issued on June 2021, after his appeal was rejected on April 29.

"Drug smuggling is a very serious case and is an unbailable offense. The NBI is mandated to track down and arrest fugitives regardless of their status. As long as you have a warrant of arrest, you become a subject of a manhunt. However, Mr. Lu Chong can spare everyone the trouble if he surrenders and face the charges against him," said NBI Operations Division Chief Joey Moran.

In the esports scene, Chong is mostly known as the owner and founder of Bren Esports, a highly successful Southeast Asian esports organization that fields teams in various esports titles, including Valorant and Wild Rift.

Founded in 2017, Bren Esports has achieved a lot of success in the esports scene. Most notably, its Mobile Legends team won the M2 World Championship in January 2021, while its Valorant team qualified for VCT Stage 3 Masters Berlin last year but was unable to attend due to travel restrictions. Shortly after, Bren parted ways with its players who would join Team Spirit.

Besides founding Bren Esports, Chong is also behind a popular social media platform Lyka and a footwear and appeal brand World Balance. Moreover, he owns the Philippine franchise of a Canadian fast food restaurant chain, Tim Hortons.

Despite its owner being wanted by the NBI, Bren Esports likely won't suffer any consequences as the organization continues to make waves in the Southeast Asian esports scene. At the end of June, Bren Esports further expanded its presence in esports by signing a new roster for Hyper Front, a new mobile FPS game.
