Ana And Topson Join T1

Former teammates reunite under a new banner
by Tit Krajnik on August 16, 2022

T1 has bolstered its Dota 2 roster ahead of The International 11, with the signing of Tobias "Topson" Taavitseinen and Anatahan "ana" Pham. The signing sees the former OG teammates return from their long break from the game and reunite under a new banner.

T1 announced the big news on Tuesday, August 16, confirming Topson and ana as the newest member of its Dota 2 division. In the announcement, T1 stated that Topson is joining the Southeast Asian team as a stand-in, but it's unknown whether ana was acquired permanently.

The signing sees Topson return to the professional Dota 2 scene following a long hiatus from the game. The 24-year-old played his last tournament in October 2021, when he helped OG place seventh-eighth at The International 10 before stepping away from the game. Ana, on the other side, stepped away from professional Dota 2 after winning TI9 in January 2020.

He had a brief return to the scene for Spring DPC in April 2021, when he replaced Yeik "MidOne" Nai Zheng at OG, before announcing his retirement on June 14, 2021. However, his hiatus didn't last for long, as ana re-entered Dota 2 competitive scene as a substitute for Team Liquid and Royal Never Give Up earlier this year, helping the teams at Piyadh Masters and PGL Arlington Major.

The two OG legends and two of the most decorated Dota 2 pro players have now seemingly decided to return to the game, albeit it remains to be seen whether their return is only temporary or whether they'll join T1's roster for the next season. But this will likely be decided based on T1's performance at TI11 if they make it to the event.

Topson and ana got added to T1's active lineup as replacements for Karl "Karl" Baldovino and Kim "Gabbi" Santos, who got cut from the team on August 11. The roster changes follow T1's shaky performance at ESL One Malaysia closed qualifiers, where the team finished fourth and did not qualify for the event.

Notably, T1 have yet to qualify for The International, having managed just 273 DPC points, which sits them in the 23rd spot in the DPC latter. However, the team still has a chance to book their tickets for Singapore via Southeast Asian qualifiers.

TI11 Southeast Asian qualifiers will kick off on September 3, welcoming 15 Dota 2 teams competing for the final ticket to The International. The qualifiers will also be the first time we'll see Topson and ana play together since 2021 when they placed fifth in the WEU DPC with OG.
