CLG Wins Coaching Staff Of The Year Award

CLG turns things around after three years
by Tit Krajnik on August 25, 2022

North American esports organization CLG won the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) coaching staff of the year award for the 2022 Summer Split. The award comes as a shock to no one due to CLG's impressive turnaround this split, posting a positive regular season record for the first time in three years.

CLG's coaching staff was recognized for its excellence on Wednesday, August 24, when the LCS awarded the esports organization the coaching staff of the year award. Sitting at the helm of CLG's coaching personnel was head coach and former CLG jungler Thomas "Thinkcard" Slotkin, who was assisted by Chris "Croissant" Sun, mostly known as former assistant coach of Team Liquid and Golden Guardians Academy.

The duo enjoyed support from an extended coaching lineup, which includes former professional players in Brandon "Brandini" Chen, Apollo "Apollo" Price, and Tanner "Damonte" Damonte, who served as positional coaches.

By winning the coaching staff of the year award, CLG has joined an exclusive club of four teams who have ever won the award since it was first introduced in LCS 2021 Spring. To date, the only four teams to win the award are Cloud9, Team Liquid, Evil Geniuses, and now CLG.

CLG have undoubtedly done enough to earn the prestigious award, having shown immense growth as a team compared to their performances in recent splits. This summer, CLG put together the organization's first positive split run since LCS 2019 Summer, finishing the year with an 11-7 record.

This split also saw CLG end the regular season in fourth place and booked an upper-bracket seed for the LCS Championship. Unfortunately, CLG's playoff run didn't start the way the organization had hoped, as CLG lost their opening match of the championship against Cloud9.

Still, by securing an upper-bracket seed, CLG have one last chance to prove their worth and compete for the LCS title via the lower bracket. They'll meet with Golden Guardians on Friday, August 26, before facing the loser of the upper bracket second-round bouts.

If CLG completes their lower-bracket run, they will have a chance to qualify for the 2022 LoL World Championship, which would mark the first time since 2016 that we would see CLG on the Worlds stage.
