T1 Make Coaching Changes Ahead Of LoL Worlds 2022

Bengi takes over as T1 head coach
by Tit Krajnik on September 05, 2022

T1 has announced changes in its coaching staff by moving Choi “Polt” Seong-hun out of his position and promoting Bae “Bengi” Seong-woong to interim head coach. The news surfaced on Monday, September 5, just north of three weeks before the start of League of Legends Worlds Championship 2022.

Korean League of Legends powerhouse T1 has decided to make changes to its coaching personnel following the team’s uninspiring finish to the summer split. Following T1’s undefeated run through LCK 2022 Spring, the team failed to reach the same heights in the summer split, ending the regular season in second place with a 15-3 record.

And even though T1 ended up reaching the finals of LCK 2022 Summer Playoffs, they had to admit defeat to their regional rivals Gen.G, who bested the defending LCK champions 3-0. Despite losing the finals, T1 still secured a ticket for LoL Worlds but couldn’t reach the high expectations, which led to changes.

“As we begin preparations for Worlds, I want to take this time to give you an important update regarding T1’s League of Legends team,” said T1 CEO Joe Marsh.

“I have made the difficult decision to move Choi “Polt” Seong-hun out of his position as head coach.”

The change sees Polt step down from the head coach position after spending nine months at the helm of the team, which he joined in November 2020 as a general manager. In December 2021, the 34-year-old was added to more duties as the head coach, and even though he has achieved a lot in LCK 2022 Spring, the team struggled in the summer split.

Despite his lack of experience as a head coach, Polt helped T1 to a perfect 18-0 spring split run before leading the team to the LCK 2022 Spring title.

His replacement, T1 promoted coach and three-time LoL world champion Bengi to the interim head coach position and T1 rookies coach Kim “Sky” Ha-Neul to the main lineup ahead of the World Championship. This will mark Bengi’s first stint as the main team head coach, but not the first time he will serve as a coach.

Former professional player and a long-standing member of T1, Bengi re-joined the organization in November 2017 as a coach for SK Telecom T1 and took over as the head coach of T1 Challengers in November 2020, leading the academy roster to LCK CL 2021 Spring regular season and playoffs title.

“Once again, it was a tough call and I have spoken with the players before coming to the final decision. And we are asking all T1 fans to show continued support and energy as our team comes together as 1 to win Worlds", added Joe Marsh.

Since leaving T1 Challengers at the end of 2021, Bengi has served as an assistant coach of T1 and has now been promoted to a head coach role. Although his promotion comes at an expected time, T1 believes that adding Bengi at the helm will help the team improve ahead of LoL Worlds, where the Korean esports organization will chase its fourth world championship title.
