Spica Leaves TSM, Enters Free Agency Ahead Of 2023 Season

Spica and TSM part ways after four years
by Tit Krajnik on September 07, 2022

Mingyi “Spica” Lu has been released by TSM following the team’s defeat against Evil Geniuses in the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) 2022 Summer Playoffs. With that, the former LCS champions and LCS 2021 Spring MVP become a restricted free agent ahead of the next LoL transfer window.

Spica’s departure from TSM is a massive but expected move following the team’s struggles in the 2022 season. Besides constant roster changes and internal turmoil within the organization, TSM failed to achieve much in the domestic league.

They finished the LCS 2022 Spring regular season in ninth place with a 5-13 record and failed to make much of a splash in the LCS Summer either, placing seventh with a 6-12 record. In the playoffs, TSM found some momentum and won their first match of the lower bracket against FlyQuest, but would then lose to the defending champions Evil Geniuses and finished the year in fifth-sixth place.

Spica joined TSM in 2019 and has played 166 games for the organization, helping TSM to win the LCS 2022 Summer Playoffs and qualify for LoL World Championship 2020. The team would continue showing promising results in 2021, placing second in LCS 2021 Spring, third in Mid-Season Showdown, and won the LCS 2021 Summer regular season, but missed out on the 2021 Lol World Championship following a 2-3 loss to Cloud9 in the playoffs.

The 21-year-old announced his departure from TSM on Tuesday, September 6, when he confirmed he can talk with other teams ahead of the 2023 season. In the announcement, he has not stated what the reason for his departure is, but Dominic Kallas later revealed that Spica and TSM could not come to financial terms.

Knowing that Spica’s four-year-long journey has come to an end, the 21-year-old jungler now enters free agency as one of the most sought-after players in the west. Despite struggling to achieve much with the team this year, Spica has stood out as the best-performing player on TSM, averaging some of the best performance starts in the league.
