Disney x Marvel Games Showcase 2022 Rundown

Everything you may have missed from the 3 day fan event.
by B.J. Bunneh3000 Brown on September 15, 2022

Disney recently held their D23 Expo to unveil their plans for future games, movies, and TV shows. Early in that expo, they held a Disney and Marvel Games Showcase to reveal new video games on the horizon.

Untitled Black Panther and Captain America Game

Amy Hennig’s new studio Skydance New Media is apparently throwing their weight around. After announcing that they were working on a new Star Wars game earlier this year, they are now revealing that the Marvel project they are working on is a team up between Black Panther and Captain America.

Not yet titled, this game is apparently set during World War II and will have players controlling 4 different heroes. As shown in the short trailer, these heroes are Steve Rogers aka Captain America, Azzuri aka T’challa’s grandfather as the WWII era Black Panther, a U.S. soldier named Gabriel Jones, and a Wakandan spy named Nanali.

Given Amy Hennig’s previous work as the writer for the Uncharted Series, the focus on a dynamic and exciting story is sure to be present alongside engaging combat.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns

Developed by the creators of XCOM, Midnight Suns is described as “the ultimate crossover event combining the rich story, character relationships, customization and progression of an RPG with the tactical strategy and combat mechanics of a revolutionary new card-based tactics game.”

To keep it short and sweet, this is basically XCOM with Marvel heroes. Specifically this new-found team has been revealed to be Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Blade, Spiderman, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Nico Minoru, Magik, and Scarlet Witch... for now. The game is said to feature the player’s demon hunting character as “The Hunter” who is expected to lead the team against the demon Lilith and other occult related foes.

Reported to be released on December 2nd for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Playstation 5, this game will also deliver 5 video shorts that will further explain the backstory for the game.

Tron: Identity

Revealed to be a narrative detective style mystery game, Tron: Identity is being developed by Bithell Games. As discussed during an interview with IGN Live, the game will focus on how the ‘programs’ in the Grid all have Light Discs also called Identity Discs. These are an essential part of who and what each program is and knows and this story aims to dig deeper into that fact. Set for release in 2023 on Steam, this game is in early production and very little information has been released.

Disney Illusion Island

Disney Illusion Island had a nice long trailer that revealed the upcoming game to be a 2D co-op platformer. Starring Mickey Mouse and his friends, it is set for release exclusively on the Nintendo Switch in 2023. With a unique art style similar to shorts that have been released on Disney Plus and online, this game looks to satisfy that Mickey Mouse game itch that many gamers have had for a while.

Marvel World of Heroes

The showcase also didn’t shy away from the mobile platform and Niantic revealed its next mobile game to be Marvel World of Heroes. Considered an augmented reality game in the same vein as Pokemon GO, this game looks to have players create their own super hero. They would then wander around collecting powers and teaming up with Marvel heroes in the real world.

This game is set for release in 2023.

Marvel Snap

Sticking with the mobile platform, Marvel also announced a Hearthstone-like card game called Marvel Snap. While the game has been in closed beta since May, it is set for release on PC and mobile platforms on October 18th.

Alien: Dark Descent

Developed by Tindalos Interactive and Focus Entertainment, this single-player action game revealed a bit of gameplay as well to reporters in attendance. Described as an RTS style XCOM game, Alien Dark Descent puts you in control of a colonial marine fireteam on an infested moon base. While there isn’t a release date as of yet, the official website did reveal a few key gameplay elements:

Face off in a gripping original Alien story against iconic Xenomorph creatures ranging from Facehuggers to Praetorians, Alien Queens and many more, including rogue human commandos and a brand-new threat unique to this Alien storyline
Lead strategically and change squad tactics from mission to mission, carefully managing your soldiers’ health, resources, and sanity, to avoid permanent team losses and mental breakdowns
Forge unique paths for survival in a persistent world, uncovering shortcuts, creating safe zones and setting up motion trackers to stay one step ahead of these creatures
Assemble and level up squads composed of 5 starting Marines classes, with dozens of specializations, unique abilities and weapons.

Alien: Dark Descent is set for release in 2023 on consoles and PC.
