Riot Games Considers Format Changes For LoL European Championship

Riot is looking to reduce the number of best-of-one series in the LEC
by Tit Krajnik on September 15, 2022

According to recent reports, the League of Legends European Championship (LEC) is considering implementing numerous format changes for the 2023 season. Most notably, Riot is looking into reducing the number of best-of-one (Bo1) series the teams have to play over the regular season.

The LoL fans have been asking for format changes in the LEC for years, the main concern being how many Bo1 games the teams have to play compared to the LoL Pro League (LPL) and Champions Korea (LCK), where the regular season uses Bo3 series. Many fans and analysts believe that a shift from Bo1 to Bo3 format in the LEC would help the region improve while also giving the teams more experience playing best-of series, something Western teams have lacked in comparison to the Chinese and Korean leagues.

Although the format changes have yet to be set in stone, Riot shared the idea with various LEC team owners earlier this week. The organizations and Riot are now working on implementing changes for the next season, putting the decision to a vote.
Notably, the meeting included talks about other changes for the LEC besides moving away from Bo1s in the regular season.

Unfortunately, those have not been publicized yet, leaving the fans wondering what the next season might bring. Moreover, it’s unclear whether Riot Games intends to simply reduce the number of Bo1s or move away from it entirely and in favor of Bo3s or Bo5s.

As it stands now, the LEC still uses a fairly outdated format, with teams playing 18 matches across the two months of the regular season before moving to six-team playoffs. The spring and summer splits use the same format, with only Bo1 matches across the regular season and Bo3 for the playoffs.

Notably, Riot has tried other formats in the European LoL league in the past – namely in the EU LCS 2017, when the regular season saw the teams competing in best-of-threes. However, the change didn’t last as the league moved back to Bo1s in 2018 and has stuck with the format since.
