G2 Esports CEO Steps Away From The Organization Over Social Media Backlash

G2 Esports suspend its CEO for eight weeks without pay
by Tit Krajnik on September 18, 2022

G2 Esports Carlos "Ocelote" Rodriguez will be stepping away from the organization for eight weeks following the internal suspension by the organization's board of supervisors. The decision follows media backlash over Rodriguez's video of himself partying with controversial content creator Andrew Tate.

On Saturday, September 17, Rodriguez posted a short video on Twitch showing him partying with Andrew Tate, a self-confessed misogynist and alleged human trafficker. The clip, however, was not accepted well by the community, who expressed their disappointment over Rodriguez's choice of friends.

Shortly after, Carlos Rodriguez posted a tweet at his detractors, saying that "nobody will ever be able to police my friendships" and that "I party with whoever the fuck I want". That escalated the situation and sent the esports community into a flurry, with many of Rodriguez's colleagues and other professional associates condemning his actions and his choice to double down.

This morning, however, it was revealed that G2 Esports suspended Rodriguez for eight weeks without pay. Notably, the decision was mutually agreed upon, as suggested by a social media post from the organization.

Shortly after the announcement, Rodriguez went on Twitter to apologize to all G2 Esports fans; however, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold. Rodriguez's association with Tate, who is best known for being banned from most social media sites and being connected to an investigation into allegations of human trafficking, is particularly concerning, and it raises more questions than it gives answers.

The esports community, in particular, was left wondering about Rodriguez's choices, knowing that G2 Esports has recently signed an all-female League of Legends roster, while the organization's CEO is seen socializing with a figure that is openly misogynistic.

Carlos Rodriguez has since apologized for his actions and will likely return to work after eight weeks. However, it remains to be seen how the incident will affect G2 Esports and the brand's reputation.
