A lot of content both angered and surprised fans.

Grand Theft Auto 6 leak: who hacked Rockstar and what was stolen? | Games | The Guardian

Grand Theft Auto is one of the few franchises that has a worldwide fanbase, regardless of what the subject matter of the game is. Because of this, there is much anticipation for any news about the next installment in the series, Grand Theft Auto VI. A leak was recently revealed that showed off some incredibly early developer images including videos of the suspected female protagonist. A lot of the images and videos are of what you can expect: interacting with NPCs, a few outdoor and walking sequences, and even a hostage situation.

The leak came from a post via the GTAForums that quickly gained traction among fans. The post, originally written by the user teapotuberhacker, simply wrote, "Hi, Here are 90 footage/clips from GTA 6. Its possible i could leak more data soon, GTA 5 and 6 source code and assets, GTA 6 testing build." Of course, fans speculated whether or not the information outlined in the leak was real or a hoax. The post was shortly proven to be true after Rockstar Games posted on their official Twitter account that they suffered a network intrusion.

Many fans were actively disappointed in the images that were leaked, though its clear that the game is still in early development. Much of the content looked like it was developed on a really old engine or was scaled down for whatever reason. Clearly, Rockstar was not ready to release any information, and it's pretty clear why. Hopefully, this will encourage an even greater reveal once they're ready to make such a large announcement.

The breach is considered a "nightmare: for Rockstar, as quoted by popular gaming journalist Jason Schreier of Bloomberg. Even though the game itself, its multiple playable protagonists, and even its female lead, were not really a surprise, the outcome of what it looks like right now is a little underwhelming. Other developers made their thoughts known as their empathized with what Rockstar is going through with respect to the breach. Names like Neil Druckmann of Naughty Dog, Mike Bithell of Bithell Games, and more game their opinions.
