Horizon Zero Dawn Remaster and Horizon Multiplayer Game in Development

Reports suggest that Zero Dawn could receive a remake/remaster just 5 years after its original releaseĀ
by Joe Wilcock on October 03, 2022

Remakes, reboots, director's cuts and remasters have become a common trend in entertainment as of late, thanks in large part to the low-risk high reward factor that comes with producing such a project. Movies can cling to iconic characters and story beats, meaning that nostalgia and fan service are guaranteed. Games can do the same, but with new technology and graphical fidelity at their disposal. Some games warrant a remaster more than others though, depending on the benefits it would gain and when it was originally released. The Last of Us Part 1, for example, has sparked a huge debate recently due to its apparent redundancy. Despite only releasing 9 years ago, The Last of Us received not just a run-of-the-mill facelift. but an all-new game built from the ground up.

Not to be beaten, Guerrilla Games have decided to remake/remaster their 2017 smash hit, Horizon Zero Dawn. The nature of the redo is yet to be discovered as the sources refused to disclose details. However, according to the original report on MP1st, it will feature an "improved lighting system (ambient occlusion, and such), overhauled textures. and better animations, with new character models to match those found in the sequel, Horizon Forbidden West".

Accessibility options and different graphics modes will be carried over from Forbidden West whilst the gameplay will remain unchanged, for the most part. Some housekeeping elements and polish will be incorporated but sequel-specific mechanics like flying mounts and the glider won't be present.

As well as a potential remaster, Guerrilla Games are reportedly working on a Horizon multiplayer experience. After originally trying to make Horizon: Zero Dawn a co-op game, it appears as though Guerrilla is returning to that concept by including it in this multiplayer project. Multiple sources, verified by MP1st, have all confirmed the existence of the untitled Horizon Multiplayer game, even detailing the customization of your characters, leaning heavily on the different tribes seen within Horizon.

Details of both projects are scarce at the moment, with no release window in sight.
