Modern Warfare II Could Be Getting Football Player Operators

Messi and Neymar were included in the game files
by Joe Wilcock on October 10, 2022

The beautiful game may not be the first thing that springs to mind when thinking about a modern military FPS game, but according to reports up to 10 football players could be hanging up their boots and picking up a rifle. Reliable Call of Duty leaker, @TheGhostOfHope, stumbled upon file names that indicate that there could be an upcoming winter world cup collaboration. The initial report has since been confirmed by Tom Henderson of Inside Gaming.

Here is the full list:

  • Aksel
  • Connor
  • Klaus
  • Luna
  • Messi
  • Neymar
  • Pogba
  • Roze
  • Reyes
  • Gromsco

Although the player names hint at new operators, they could just as easily be a part of a general World Cup crossover event. Having seen Bukayo Saka in the new trailer, alongside Nikki Minaj, the reports look to be legitimate. Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0 will look to continue their collaborations after the Godzilla and King Kong event last May.

The Qatar Winter World World cup is due to kick off on November 20th and will conclude a month later on December 18th. This gives Call of Duty ample time to make the most of an event that usually takes place during the summer months.

In other news, Modern Warfare 2 has added fuel to the fire that Overwatch 2 started by announcing that players must have a mobile phone in order to play. According to battle.net, mobile phones with prepaid contracts may be ineligible so pay-as-you-go customers are out of luck.

“Any mobile phone in a supported country with a data plan, and that is not prepaid or a VOIP number, can be used with this service.”
- battle.net

Further Eligibility and Limitations:

  • Messaging apps like iMessage (iOS) or WhatsApp (iOS, Android) are not supported.
  • Mobile phones with prepaid plans may not work with the phone notification service.
  • Phone notifications cannot be used with Voice over IP (VoIP), and VoIP numbers that are transferred to a local provider are not eligible for the service.

Modern Warfare II launches on October 28th, with Warzone 2.0 following it on November 16th 2022. Both will release on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S.
