Xbox Reportedly Building a Mobile Gaming Store

Apple and Google store rival?
by Natalie Collazo on October 19, 2022

Microsoft's Xbox Cloud Gaming service is now available on iOS devices | Engadget

It's no surprise that Microsoft wants to move the Xbox name forward into the realm of mobile gaming. In fact, cloud gaming has already allowed for some games to be streamed through the Xbox app so players can enjoy their experiences anywhere. Now, it looks like Xbox wants to create a mobile gaming store that would essentially rival the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. This all stems from their buyout of Activision Blizzard as their primary motivation for the growth of their mobile gaming presence. This was only recently revealed when the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) began investigating the sale and Microsoft's intentions behind moving forward with it.

The transaction will improve Microsoft’s ability to create a next generation game store which operates across a range of devices, including mobile as a result of the addition of Activision Blizzard’s content. Building on Activision Blizzard’s existing communities of gamers, Xbox will seek to scale the Xbox Store to mobile, attracting gamers to a new Xbox Mobile Platform. Shifting consumers away from the Google Play Store and App Store on mobile devices will, however, require a major shift in consumer behavior. Microsoft hopes that by offering well-known and popular content, gamers will be more inclined to try something new.

Two popular mobile titles under the Microsoft name now are Call of Duty Mobile and Candy Crush Saga, which normally wouldn't be associated with the home console giant. The company even lent its support to Valve's Steam Deck for players to be able to play their Xbox games using Cloud gaming. With that in mind, it makes sense for them to want to create a platform that is exclusive to their new titles as well as the ones that they've acquired along their buyout journey. Hopefully, we will hear more as time progresses.
