New Bayonetta Voice Actress Not Met With Enthusiasm

The witch has a new voice!

Bayonetta 3's New Voice Actor Asks Everyone To "Just Be Good To Each Other" | Nintendo Life

The latest controversy within the video game sphere focuses on the upcoming third installment of the Bayonetta series, Bayonetta 3. Earlier this year, the original voice actress for the titular character, Hellena Taylor, voiced her thoughts about no longer being the voice. The news was not met with much enthusiasm from fans of the series, who regard her as the only voice possible for the character, which lead to a new conversation. Apparently, the reason behind this decision had nothing to do with moving in a new direction so much as it was that Platinum Games would not pay her a living wage for her role.

“The Bayonetta franchise made an approximated $450 million, and that’s not including merchandise. As an actor, I trained for a total of seven and a half years – three years at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art Lambda with voice coach Barbara Berkery, and four and a half years with the legendary Larry Moss in Los Angeles. And what did they think this was worth? What did they offer to pay me? The final offer to do the whole game as a buyout, flat rate, was $4,000 USD.”

The voice that is set to be the new Bayonetta was revealed to be longtime voice actress, Jennifer Hale. Fans recognize her from projects like Mass Effect where she voiced the female version of the protagonist. Although she has many great performances under her belt, this news didn't resonate with longtime fans. She wrote a Twitter post that both discussed her opinion on the matter as well as touched on the conversation started by Taylor. Platinum Games responded with their own Tweet agreeing with her and providing their own opinion on the matter.

But, what does that mean about the wages that were paid out to other voices that will be featured in the game? As of right now, Hale is the only one to make any sort of comment about Taylor's experience. Bayonetta 3 is set to release on the Nintendo Switch on October 28.
