Phil Spencer Reiterates that Call of Duty on PlayStation is Staying

The now Xbox giant is here to stay
by Natalie Collazo on October 31, 2022

Call of Duty® | Best-Selling Video Game Franchise

Earlier this year, it was announced that Microsoft would be purchasing the publishing team behind the critically-acclaimed Call of Duty franchise, Activision. Since this announcement, fans have been rightfully afraid that the game will become a PC and Xbox exclusive. Phil Spencer has said on many occasions that this would not be the case, as the partnership that the game has with PlayStation players is far too important. Even though the company is looking forward to bringing Call of Duty to an even wider variety of players, Spencer has made it clear once more in the Same Brain podcast that the intention is not to remove the franchise from the hands of PlayStation players.

“As long as there’s a PlayStation out there to ship to, our intent is that we continue to ship Call of Duty on PlayStation, similar to what we’ve done with Minecraft. Since we’ve owned that, we’ve expanded the places people can play Minecraft. We haven’t reduced the places, and it’s been good for the Minecraft community, in my opinion, and I want to do the same as we think about where Call of Duty can go over the years.”

His comparison to Minecraft is important as it is one of the most played video games of all time with ownership belonging to Microsoft after their acquisition of Mojang. While many people are rightfully afraid of the future of their favorite first-person shooter, it's also clear that Microsoft has done what they can to ensure that gamers can play their favorite games wherever they are with whoever they want. The most recently released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 saw incredible day-one results which only furthers the point of why it wouldn't be wise to make the game a console exclusive.
