Modern Warfare II Enjoys its Biggest Launch Ever on PlayStation

COD sees a return to form after lackluster Vanguard sales
by Joe Wilcock on November 01, 2022

Call of Duty has been at the forefront of mass commercial appeal and financial success for almost two decades. Racking up over $30 billion since 2003 with 425 million sales, the military shooter is undoubtedly a cultural phenomenon and remains one of the hottest franchises on the planet. However, Activision's last entry in the series was markedly underwhelming, with sales underperforming as a result. Physical sales for Vanguard went down by 26% and Digital sales plummeted by 44% compared to the year before. Within Activision Blizzard's 2021 annual report, they were very outspoken about their disappointment with its reception:

"While Call of Duty remains one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time, our 2021 premium release didn’t meet our expectations, we believe primarily due to our own execution. The game’s World War II setting didn’t resonate with some of our community and we didn’t deliver as much innovation in the premium game as we would have liked. We are certainly addressing both of these issues with the 2022 launch."

- Activision Blizzard

As the old adage goes, form is temporary but class is permanent and this year Call of Duty has returned to its former glory. Although no official numbers have been released as of yet, PlayStation announced via Twitter that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II had the "biggest PlayStation Store launch EVER for a Call of Duty game (including preorders and day one sales)".

Despite Microsoft acquiring Activision-Blizzard, Phil Spencer has reiterated his loyalty to PlayStation as growing concerns led many to believe it would become an Xbox exclusive. This means that all future Call of Duty titles will be playable on PlayStation consoles, including Warzone 2.0 which will look to build on the success of Modern Warfare II, capitalizing on the influx of players. The Battle Royal sequel is due to release on November 16th and will use the same engine that will unify all Call of Duty titles going forward.
