Last of Us Tabletop Board Game in the Works

Get ready for a new level of terror.
by Natalie Collazo on November 02, 2022

With so much being released with respect to the Last of Us franchise, a little more couldn't possibly hurt. Developer Naughty Dog announced their intention of adapting their popular game into a tabletop board game. The game, titled The Last of Us: Escape the Dark is being developed by board game company Themeborne. It will support up to five players who are tasked with overcoming challenges similar to other Escape the Dark games. Players take on the roles of either Ellie, Joel, Tess, Billy, Timmy, or Marlene and make choices that will alter the fates of the characters involved. The actual story being involved is a bit different from the video game and will thrust players into a journey created all on their own.

"Gameplay involves players making choices about which route to take and resolving immersive ‘chapter cards’ at familiar locations from the video game, including the Suburbs, Sewers, and University. Survival will depend on using a tactical combination of item cards and custom dice to overcome iconic threats, such as Hunters and Infected."

The game is in black and white, adding to the rugged aesthetic of the world portrayed in the video game. It will be available via Kickstarter on November 8 and will feature a collector's edition. No details were provided about this edition but we will learn more once the actual campaign goes live. From the visuals, it looks like it will follow the likeness of the video games over Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, who play Joel and Elli respectively in the upcoming HBO based on the game.
