Steam Stops Family Sharing For Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Despite having one of the biggest debuts in the franchise

Steam Family Sharing

Steam Family Sharing has been an available feature that allows players to share a single digital copy of a game with up to five selected people. The service does have its limitations like how two people cannot both be playing the same game at the same time. Despite this, however, the service still has a lot of value for people who would just rather not spend so much money on video games when they all know they will be playing them in their own time anyway. It looks like the newest Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was randomly excluded from this service despite launching with it.

Some have expressed their concerns about no longer being able to purchase the game due to it no longer including the feature while others are upset that it was done last minute. Steam has a two-hour return window for games purchased on their platform so many players were far past that point in their gameplay before the feature was turned off. Some have speculated that this was done in order to mitigate cheating since the feature could technically be used to bounce between accounts. The team behind the anti-cheat software placed within the game has been transparent about their efforts to curb cheating though if this is a part of that plan, nothing has been said about it.

Users took to Reddit with their thoughts on the issue:

“I own the game on Steam and I work. I can’t play as much as my younger cousin can and neither of us want to play on the same account cause we got our own level, classes, friends, etc.”

“This sucks. my nephew plays MW2 while I’m away at work through Family share. The game is just too expensive to justify another copy right now.”

“This should’ve been a move done prior to its release—before people went [past] the 2 hour limit. [...] the only way I justified this game 101$ CAD price tag was if my younger brother (who was hyped for it more than me) also got to play ON THE SAME PC”

In fact, no one has made a statement about the feature being turned off. Steam has yet to explain whether or not fans who purchased the game with the intention of using it for that would receive any kind of refund and Activision. has not explained why the service was removed or if there is any intention of having it return at all.
