OG and ATF Part Ways

ATF leaves OG following The International 2022
by Tit Krajnik on November 03, 2022

OG announced the departure of Ammar "ATF" Al-Assaf, who was let go from the international Dota 2 roster on Thursday, November 3. ATF is the first player to leave OG ahead of the 2023 season.

ATF was put on OG's inactive squad on Thursday, ending his one-year stint with the European esports organization. The 17-year-old joined OG in November 2021 as a part of a major roster rebuild following the retirement of OG's core players Sébastien "Ceb" Debs and Johan "N0tail" Sundstein.

As announced, OG and ATF mutually parted ways after ATF received several offers from other teams. Although no teams were specifically mentioned as ATF's potential new homes, the 17-year-old has noted that he has offers for positions one and three on the table.

ATF is widely regarded as one of the best offlaners in the Dota 2 scene, so it's easy to see why his departure from OG has caught the community off-guard. However, some have speculated that ATF's shallow champion pool had something to do with OG's decision to replace him.

Nevertheless, ATF has achieved a lot during his one-year stay at OG. He kicked off his campaign with the storied organization with a bronze medal from the DPC WEU Tour 1: Regional Final and added two titles from DPC WEU Tour 2: Division I and ESL One Stockholm 2022.

With ATF, OG continued producing solid results throughout the 2022 season. They finished the final WEU DPC tour in third place, reached the semifinals of Riyadh Masters 2022, placed fourth at PGL Arlington Major 2022, and won ESL One Malaysia 2022.

Unfortunately, OG failed to deliver at The International 2022. Even though OG enjoyed a solid start and ended the group stage in fourth place, they couldn't manage a deep run in the playoffs.

OG crashed out of the upper bracket in the first round, where they lost against Tundra Esports. And even though OG bounced back in the lower bracket, eliminating Entity, they proved no match for Team Liquid, who eliminated them from the event in the third round.

ATF's recruitment to OG with his former Creepwave teammate, Bozhidar "bzm" Bogdanov, signified OG's intention to build a new era. So even though ATF will no longer be a part of the organization, OG will likely continue on the same path and look for new future stars in the their-two scene rather than signing an established veteran.

It's currently unknown who will replace ATF as OG's new offlaner, but we'll likely see the announcement in the coming weeks.
