Ratchet and Clank Celebrates 20th Anniversary

New armour packs will be coming to Rift Apart and more games are being added to PlayStation Premium
by Joe Wilcock on November 05, 2022

The Ratchet and Clank series is one of the most beloved franchises in gaming. Seemingly evergreen, the duos’ adventures have spanned across two decades and over 17 entries putting them among the most prolific gaming series in recent history. For good reason too, Ratchet and Clank have delivered consistent quality since its first release in 2002. Not only have their earlier titles aged like a fine wine, but the series is arguably at its peak now with the 2016 reboot and Rift Apart

To celebrate their success, Insomniac has announced a handful of goodies to coincide with the anniversary.

“We’re thrilled to announce Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will receive a 20th Anniversary Armor Pack TODAY in honor of #Ratchet20, which will be available via a game update at no extra cost. * The pack includes five armors inspired by games throughout the franchise’s history – and we have an awesome selection”

- Aaron Jason Espinoza, Senior Community Manager, Insomniac Games

The selection is indeed awesome, harkens back to games of old, Rift Apart will be receiving the following armour sets:

  • Commando Armor inspired by Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando
  • Holoflux Armor inspired by Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time
  • Quest Armor inspired by Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty
  • Marauder Armor inspired by Ratchet: Deadlocked
  • Clank Armor to celebrate the greatest of pals

Several legacy titles are also being added to PlayStation Premium to round off the collection.

The news comes via the PlayStation Blog and Insomniac took the chance to reminisce on the inception of the franchise and the difficulties they faced in development.

“When we were in early production on the original Ratchet & Clank in 2001, we were trying to find the right tone for the story. Brian Hastings had come up with the core concept for the game and we had moved quickly into prototyping. The tricky part was finding the right comedic flavor for our scenes”

– Ted Price, President of Insomniac Games

Insomniac’s Head of Creative Strategy also shared some eureka moments where the game clicked for him. Insomniac were under great pressure at the time to follow up the Spyro series so every milestone in the development of Ratchet and Clank was paramount.

“I remember the first time I did a hoverboard half-pipe jump on a spherical world and saw the tiny planet receding in the distance below me. That was midway through development of the first Ratchet game, and it was one of many moments that made me think “wow, we’ve got something really special here.” Funny thing is, as amazing as the spherical worlds were, we ended up deciding to save them for the sequel.

Two other favorite moments that did make the cut: sucking up a whole nest of sandsharks with the Suck Cannon and blasting them back out at each other, and the first reveal of Metropolis on Kerwan when you walk through the tunnel and see the sprawling city and rivers of air cars in front of you. But there are at least a hundred other unforgettable moments from the making of that first game I could pick. That first year was a magical period of time where every day somebody was adding something new and incredible into the mix.“

– Brian Hastings, Head of Creative Strategy at Insomniac Games

The blog features several pieces of concept art and many more anecdotes on Ratchet and Clank’s development, influence and significance.
