Team Aster Rebuild Dota 2 Roster With Xwy and rOtK

Aster replace two members ahead of the 2023 DPC season
by Tit Krajnik on November 14, 2022

Team Aster completed its 2023 Dota 2 roster on Sunday, November 11, with the signing of a new mid laner in Zhai "Xwy" Jingkai and coach Bai "rOtK" Fan. The roster changes come just two weeks after Team Aster's solid run at The International 2022, where the Chinese Dota 2 squad placed fourth.

Team Aster recently finished one of the organization's most successful seasons, culminating with a fourth-place finish at The international. They were the only Chinese Dota 2 team to make it to the finals weekend, and even though they eventually had to admit defeat to Team Liquid, Aster can be happy with what they've achieved in 2022.

But despite the team's success, Aster opted to make a couple of changes to its Dota 2 roster ahead of the 2023 season, replacing its mid laner and head coach. The changes, however, are not shocking since it was known that Zeng "Ori" Jiaoyang would retire from pro play and that Aster would need to find a new no.2.

And even though it was initially not known who would replace the 27-year-old, Aster decided to promote Xwy, who has been with Aster's academy team, Aster Aries, since May 2022. Besides changes in the mid lane, Aster also announced rOtK, who will take over the head coach role from Zhang "LaNm" Zhicheng.

Xwy, while joining from Aster's academy roster, is anything from a newcomer to the professional Dota 2 scene. The 26-year-old started his esports career in January 2017 and has been since a member of some of China's most recognizable esports organizations, including Keen Gaming, EHOME, and Phoenix Gaming.

Likewise, rOtK is a known figure in the Asian Dota 2 scene and a former pro player who enjoyed a long and illustrious career between 2011 and 2017. Since retireing as a player in September 2017, rOtK transitioned to coaching and was at the helm of Invictus Gaming, VGJ.Thunder, ViCi Gaming, and Elephant.

As a coach, rOtK has qualified for The International three times, and while he has yet to lift the Aegis of Champions, he helped ViCi place top six in 2019. His other notable accomplishments include gold medals from Galaxy Battles II: Emerging Worlds, DreamLeague Season 11, EPICENTER Major 2019, and ONE Esports Dota 2 World Pro Invitational Singapore, and runner-up finishes at The Bucharest Major and MDL Chengdu Major.

Even though Aster have replaced two key members of the roster that achieved a lot in 2022, the Chinese Dota 2 team seems to have upgraded by adding an accomplished mid laner and one of the most experienced Dota 2 coaches in the region.

We will see Team Aster's new-look roster in action with the start of the 2023 Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) season, set to kick off on December 11 with the closed qualifiers. The first Tour will then begin on January 9 for the upper division and January 30, 2023, for the second division.
