Beyond Good & Evil 2 is Still in “Early Development” After 15 Years

Playtesters say the game is still in the “blocking phase”
by Joe Wilcock on November 30, 2022

It’s hard to believe that it’s been fourteen years since we got the Beyond Good & Evil 2 announcement trailer and four years since the mind-blowing pre-alpha demo. That demo now seems like a pipe dream as internal/external playtesters have disclosed that the game is no further than the “blocking phase” of development. Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still, after all these years, in early development with no release date in sight. Despite the long delay, Ubisoft remain committed to the project and assure fans that its still on the way:

“Beyond Good and Evil 2’s development is underway and the team is hard at work to deliver on its ambitious promise.”

- Ubisoft

Insider Gaming was privy to several videos and images depicting the state of the game and it doesn’t sound good. Although the images are under embargo, they apparently illustrate untextured and low-detailed structures and locations, a far cry from the pre-alpha build. The spaceships do look as promised though, so at least there’s that.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 has officially taken Duke Nukem Forever’s crown spending the most time in development for a game. By all accounts, it could be another couple of years until it releases, which would take the total development time to over 6000 days. By the time it eventually releases, two decades would have elapsed between the first game and its sequel. This gigantic wait is only rivalled by Battletoads Arcade and Battletoads (26 years), Streets of Rage 3 and 4 (26 years) and Kid Icarus and Kid Icarus: Of Myths And Monsters & Uprising (21 years).
