CD Projekt Red to End Support for The Witcher: Monster Slayer in 2023

Did you even know about the AR game?
by Natalie Collazo on December 06, 2022

The official Witcher website announced that its AR title, The Witcher: Monster Slayer, will be shut down for good as of June 2023. If you haven't heard of it, don't worry as it wasn't very wildly popular despite being available portable on iOS and Android.

Players took on the role of a witcher where the world in-game was supported by Google Maps. Therefore, players had to actually move around in the real world in order to find and defeat monsters, collect herbs, and follow different objectives. Even the time of day was a factor as different things can be discovered. The official website has an official statement from the development team behind the game, Spokko:

Dear Witchers,

Sadly, we have to announce that our journey with The Witcher: Monster Slayer is coming to an end. We will be shutting down the game on the 30th of June, 2023.

We are proud that we were able to create a location-based AR experience that captured what it was like to be a witcher in real life and gave the community a chance to battle Witcher-world monsters up close and in person. This is what made The Witcher: Monster Slayer such a unique experience in The Witcher franchise.

We are very thankful for sharing all of this with such an amazing and passionate community from all over the world. This journey, filled with quests, events, and adventure, would not have been possible without you — together, we defeated over 100 million monsters worldwide, after all!

Thank you for slaying with us,

Spokko team

P.S. The game will be available on the App Store and Google Play Store until the 31st of January, 2023. From the 1st of February, the game will go through some major changes, leading up to the closing of the game, on the 30th of June 2023. Whether or not this means that a different mobile title is in the works is unclear. However, it's hard to say that it will never happen as The Witcher has grown to be one of the biggest franchises of all time. In fact, it was only recently announced that a remake of the first game in the series, simply titled The Witcher, will be receiving a remake.
