Ame Takes A Break From Dota 2

Ame stepping down from the team ushers a major roster overhaul for PSG.LGD
by Tit Krajnik on December 08, 2022

One of the world's most recognizable Dota 2 position 1 players, Wang "Ame" Chunyu, announced on Wednesday, December 7, that he would be taking time away from competitive Dota 2. The news came just two days ahead of the Dota 2 roster lock for the 2023 season, but PSG.LGD already found replacements.

As revealed on Wednesday, Ame will not be competing with PSG.LGD in the 2023 season, as the 25-year-old decided to take a break from professional play. The news surfaced just over a week after PSG.LGD parted ways with Zhao "XinQ" Zixing and Zhang "Faith_bian" Ruida, who retired from Dota 2 on November 30.

The departures left PSG.LGD with just two players on the active roster in Cheng "NothingToSay" Jin Xiang, who continues his loan spell from EHOME, and in-game leader Zhang "y'" Yiping, who has been a member of PSG.LGD since September 2020.

But despite the abrupt departures from the Chinese Dota 2 team, PSG.LGD didn't need long to find replacements to fill in the void, announcing Guo "shiro" Xuanang, Li "xiang yu" Longwu, and Lin "planet" Hao as the newest members of the team on Thursday.

It remains to be seen what Ame's future plans are, but his departure will be noticeable. Ame has been one of the most consistent players on various iterations of PSG.LGD roster, which was one of the most dominant in the region, came one match short of winning The International in 2021. This season, they couldn't emulate that success, finishing The International 2022 in fifth place, but even that is an accomplishment of its own.

Although the departure of Ame, Faith_bian and XinQ will leave a huge dent in PSG.LGD, the Chinese Dota 2 powerhouse found solid replacements to fill in the voids.

Shiro and planet join PSG.LGD from EHOME, with who they struggled to achieve much in 2022, but had placed fourth in the DPC CN 2021/2022 Tour 1: Division I and Regional Finals. Of the new arrivals, xiang yu is the most exciting, as he began his career in March 2022 and is by far the least experienced player on the roster.

Still, despite his lack of experience competing at the highest level, xiang yu has achieved plenty in his debut year. He led CDEC Gaming to DPC CN 2021/2022 Tour 3: Division II title and ended the year with a fifth-place finish in The International 2022: China Qualifier, coming just two series short of qualifying for TI11.

Whether the new-look roster of PSG.LGD roster will manage to achieve the same success its previous iteration did remains to be seen. But given the organization's success with various rosters over the year, there's definitely room for optimism heading into the 2023 season.
