Game Studio Proletariat Unionizes Under Activision Blizzard

Another studio decides to unionize
by Natalie Collazo on December 27, 2022

Proletariat, a Boston-based gaming studio, has announced plans to unionize with the Communications Workers of America. If successful, around 60 employees who worked on the new Dragonflight expansion for World of Warcraft would join the ranks of organized labor at parent company Activision Blizzard.

The Proletariat Workers Alliance, which claims to have a supermajority of support from qualifying staff, has filed for a union election with the National Labor Relations Board, but is also calling for Activision Blizzard to voluntarily recognize the union. This move breaks Activision Blizzard's previous attempts to sabotage unionization efforts at its other studios. The Proletariat Workers Alliance would be unique among gaming unions as it would represent all non-management staff at the studio, rather than just quality assurance staff.

The developers are seeking flexible PTO, optional remote work, no mandatory overtime, and policies fostering diversity, equality, and inclusion at the bargaining table if the union drive is successful. Activision Blizzard has not yet commented on whether it will voluntarily recognize the union or try to fight it. Proletariat was founded in 2012 by former developers from Zynga, Insomniac Games, and Harmonix, and was acquired by Blizzard in July 2020 after the shutdown of its game Spellbreak.
