Shadow of the Colossus Developers Tease New Game

genDESIGN is “hard at work” on their fourth title
by Joe Wilcock on December 30, 2022

The masterminds behind cult classics ICO, Shadow of the Colossus and, to a lesser extent, The Last Guardian are busy working on their next game. If their track record is anything to go by, the next title won’t be coming any time soon but it is almost certain to be a memorable experience as per their previous releases.

Built upon the core team established for ICO, Team ICO (under parent company Japan Studio) would later become genDESIGN as they worked on Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian. The former was a resounding success, ICO exposed the talents at their disposal but Shadow of the Colossus made them a worldwide success.

Whilst working on ICO, studio director Fumito Ueda perfected the concept of “show don’t tell”. Their first game would utilise contextual clues and the world to tell its story, rather than character-based exposition. This was pioneering for the time, especially because of its execution and how well it was realised which led many to regard it as genuine art as opposed to a video game.

Shadow of the Colossus would use all that was previously learned and perfect its interesting storytelling resulting in what many regard as the PlayStation 2’s finest game. However, what is most surprising about their early success is that ICO and Shadow of the Colossus were released within just four years of each other, launching in 2001 and 2005 respectively. It would be another 11 years until they would release a new game.

Ueda was fascinated by the fan's emotional responses to Shadow of the Colossus, in particular how the relationship between the main character, Wander, and his horse Agro resonated so strongly with fans. He intended to have the main emotional bond be between Wander and Mono, the damsel in distress as it were. This revelation led Ueda to create a game where a relationship between the character and a creature would be the central focus, enter The Last Guardian.

Announced in 2009, it was originally perceived as a combination of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, but it took an eternity to actually release, becoming a bit of a joke in the meantime. It would eventually launch in 2016 to a lukewarm reception. Critics were impressed by Trico’s animations and simulation, but it was a little bereft of that iconic genDESIGN quality.

Six years later we may have received some information that points towards a new game. Twitter user, Onion00048, believes that genDESIGN is hard at work on a new game with plans to announce the project in 2023. A picture was released depicting the previous three projects and a fourth one is suspected to be in the works. It illustrates a character in a poncho leaning on what could be ancient technology or a rock. Take from that what you will, but at least it gives us a small incline as to what their next project is.
