Scump Retires From Professional Call of Duty

One of the greatest CoD players unexpectedly retires mid-season
by Tit Krajnik on January 18, 2023

Call of Duty legend Seth "Scump" Abner officially retired from professional Call of Duty in the middle of what was expected to be his final season. The 27-year-old announced the news on Tuesday, January 17, with an emotional goodbye message.

Ahead of the 2023 season, Scump already revealed that he plans to retire from the professional Call of Duty scene, and that this season would be his last. But after competing in just one Call of Duty League (CDL) event, Scump has officially hung up his controller for good.

In the short video, Scump explained that he decided to retire to focus on content creation, which he had always wanted to do. But by focusing on creating content, he came across the struggle of managing competitive focus, fan interaction, and content creation all at once, leaving him with no choice but to exit CoD esports early.

In the announcement, Scump also confirmed that he would be replaced on OpTic Texas roster by Brandon "Dashy" Otell, who returned to the main lineup just a couple of weeks after being moved to substitute.

Scump retired after competing in just one CDL event in 2023, the 2023 CDL Major 1, where OpTic Texas placed ninth-12th. The team is currently in the middle of CDL Major 2 Qualifier, with one win to their name, against Boston Breach, who OpTic beat 3-2.
The close victory marked Scump's last professional match, ending his long and illustrious career as a CoD esports pro, which began in January 2011.

Throughout the 12 years, Scump has spent most of his time with OpTic in three separate stints, with his final spanning from January 2014 to now. With the Green Wall, Scump won the 2017 World Championship and X Games, has accumulated 31 tournament titles and, with that, became one of the most successful CoD players in history.
