Gears of War Announcements Expected This Year

Gears 6 and Gears of War 1-3 remasters are reportedly in the works
by Joe Wilcock on January 23, 2023

The Gears of War have ground to a halt in recent years, leaving the franchise in desperate need of a new lease on life. The series has seen five major mainline releases, as well as several spin-offs including the well-received Gears of War: Judgement Day. Although the last entry in the franchise, Gears 5, was also met with a positive critical reception, the series has lost some steam with the mainstream audience and isn't as renowned as it once was.

Gears 5 was Microsoft's most successful launch since Halo 4 and was played by over 3 million people in the first weekend but despite its apparent success, it sold 4.5 times fewer copies than its predecessor in the UK and was only the seventh best-selling game in the US for September. It's a quality series in need of some fresh ideas to put it back on its pedestal and if rumours are to be believed, 2023 is going be an important year for Gears of War.

According to Twitter user Onion00048, Gears of War 1-3 remasters are in development and are expected to be announced at Microsoft's Developer Direct. The original trilogy launched in 2006 making it 17 years old, a stark reminder of the quick passage of time. Then, later in June at E3, a mainline sequel will be announced presumably taking on the series new naming convention: Gears 6. A quick turnaround is expected with a 2024 release window, which will see a five-year gap between Gears 5 and Gears 6, the longest in the series' history along with Gears of War 3 and 4.

The Coalition is expected to carry on the series, having developed several Gears of Wars titles already including the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition which was a remaster of the first game. They were also responsible for the proof of concept Unreal Engine The Matrix Awakened demo, which is a testament to their graphical pedigree if nothing else.
