Washington Post Shuts Down Gaming Section, Launcher

This comes among so many other industry layoffs.
by Natalie Collazo on January 24, 2023

The Washington Post, owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos, has announced more layoffs this week, including the closure of its gaming section, Launcher. Launched just three years ago, Launcher had established itself as a reputable source for news and interviews in the video game industry.

Some members of the Launcher team will be reassigned to other parts of The Washington Post while others will be laid off. A total of 50 positions are being eliminated, including 30 unfilled vacancies and 20 staff members losing their jobs. In a memo to staff, executive editor Sally Buzbee stated, "We are also eliminating currently filled positions we concluded are not essential to serving our competitive needs."

Bezos, who purchased The Washington Post for $250 million in 2013, visited the Washington D.C. office last week, stating his commitment to the paper and expressing a desire to listen to management's ideas for expansion and growth.

The closure of Launcher comes amid a trend of media companies shedding jobs as the Federal Reserve aims to stimulate a recession to appease Wall Street investors. The video game industry, on the other hand, is projected to reach $300 billion by the end of the decade. Recently, IGN, Game Informer, Fanbyte, GameSpot, and Giant Bomb have also experienced layoffs.
