Fnatic Shuts Down Its Dota 2 Division

After 10 years, Fnatic is stepping away from competitive Dota 2
by Tit Krajnik on February 10, 2023

Fnatic announced on Friday, February 10, that the organization is shutting down its Dota 2 operation. The news comes as a shock to the whole esports community as it marks the end of a 10-year-long era.

On Friday, Fnatic officially shut down its Dota 2 division, releasing all five of its players in Kim "Gabbi" Santos, Armel "Armel" Tabios, Damien "kpii" Chok, Djardel "DJ" Mampusti, and Jaunuel "Jaunuel" Arcilla. As revealed by the organization, Fnatic decided to temporarily withdraw from Dota 2 due to questions of sustainability and the game's future.

"Recently we have been forced to reflect on the sustainability and future of the title for Fnatic, and ultimately, to make a difficult but necessary decision to temporarily withdraw from the DOTA 2 pro circuit," read the announcement.

"We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the players, staff, and members who have been a part of this incredible journey, alongside our incredible fanbase who have made our journey in the SEA region so special."

Fnatic's withdrawal marks the end of a 10-year-long era, which started at the end of 2011 when Fnatic signed a Serbian-Croatian roster. Since then, Fnatic has fielded various squads but have been a part of the SEA region for most of the past decade.

Throughout the team's history, Fnatic have made six editions of The International and placed fourth in 2016. Unfortunately, since Black & Orange's incredible run at TI6, the team consistently fell flat on the biggest stage. This year, in particular, was disappointing for Fnatic, who crashed out of the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) upper division with an eighth-place finish in DPC SEA 2023 Tour 1: Division I.

As stated, Fnatic will only temporarily exit the Dota 2 esports scene, which leaves the possibility of the team returning in the future. But as it stands now, it's uncertain when that will happen.
