The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Becomes Nintendo's First $70 Game for the Switch

Fortunately, this doesn't look like it will be a trend for future Switch games.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Accidentally Appears for $70 on Switch eShop - Insider Gaming

Nintendo is breaking new ground with its first $70 game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. However, it seems that this won't be a common trend for the company. The price point will only be reserved for specific titles, according to a statement from a Nintendo spokesperson.

"We determine the suggested retail price for any Nintendo product on a case-by-case basis," the spokesperson told Game Informer. When asked if this was part of a new trend for Switch games, Nintendo simply responded, "No." This suggests that the company will be pricing its games based on each title's individual merit, rather than following a blanket policy.

The release of Pikmin 4 on July 21 is priced at the standard $60, while Metroid Prime Remastered is even lower at $40. This suggests that Nintendo won't be sticking to the $70 price point for all of its games.

When Nintendo first announced the $70 price for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, some gamers were taken aback. The game is running on the same hardware as Breath of the Wild, which was released six years ago, which is usually what publishers use to justify price increases.

Others argued that companies should experiment more with pricing, instead of making up for it with paid DLC, season passes, and expansions.

Nintendo is not alone in exploring higher prices, especially as many countries are facing record levels of inflation. Many current-gen games have adopted the $70 price point, a move made by Sony when the PS5 was first released. Microsoft, which initially resisted this trend, also announced price hikes at the end of last year.

Only time will tell if Nintendo will take a similar stance when the next iteration of the Switch is released in the coming years. For now, it seems that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be an exception, rather than the rule.
