Embracer, the video game publisher behind the recent Saints Row reboot and the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic remake, has announced that it is expanding its reach into the world of cinema with a new movie deal with New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures. The deal will bring The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit back to the big screen, with "multiple" films planned to expand upon the works of JRR Tolkien.

While the films will feature familiar characters such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Gollum, Galadriel, and Eowyn, Embracer has made it clear that these new movies will not be remakes of Peter Jackson's beloved trilogies. Instead, the films will cover fresh ground and explore new aspects of Middle Earth.

The deal comes after Embracer acquired the rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit in August of last year, with plans to explore additional movies based on iconic characters from Tolkien's works.

But Embracer's foray into Middle Earth isn't limited to the big screen. The publisher has no less than five Lord of the Rings video games in development, set to be released before the end of March 2024. Among them is Daedalic's long-delayed Gollum game, which Embracer will receive a cut of.

In total, Embracer has 224 games in development, with plans to release them up until March 2028. While only a fraction of those will be "AAA" releases, with 31 games falling under that category, the publisher's expansion into cinema is a sign of its growing influence and ambition within the entertainment industry.
