Cloud9 Part Ways With Yay

Cloud9 agrees to release yay from his contract
by Tit Krajnik on February 26, 2023

Cloud9 Valorant team officially parted ways with Jaccob "yay" Whiteaker, who left the team on Sunday, February 26. This marks the end of yay's five-month stint with the North American esports organization, which he joined in October from OpTic Gaming.

As reported, yay's departure from Cloud9 wasn't performance related but rather a result of a mutual agreement between the two parties. As expected, Cloud9 will begin trials next week in search of yay's replacement, while yay will enter free agency and entertain new offers.

Yay's departure from Cloud9 comes a week after the team's early elimination from VCT 2023 LOCK//IN Sao Paulo, where Cloud9 crashed out in the second round. The North American Valorant squad got eliminated by DRX, who have reached the semifinals stage of the event, where they'll face off against the reigning Valorant world champions, LOUD.

It has yet to be revealed who will replace yay at Cloud9, but according to rumours, the North American squad is eyeing former OpTic Gaming player Jimmy "Marved" Nguyen, who is one of the leading candidates to step in yay's shoes. Marved is currently an inactive player and has been since December 18, when he stepped down from OpTIc's active lineup.

Cloud9 now have just over a month to complete its lineup and fill in the void left behind by yay. The team will showcase its new roster in the Americas international league, which is set to kick off on March 26 and run until May 28.

Yay, who is still regarded as one of the best Valorant players in the world, now enters free agency and will likely be a highly sought-after player in the pre-season market. Despite failing to leave a mark with Cloud9 in the season's opening event, he helped the team place second in Red Bull Home Ground #3, just months after leading OpTic Gaming to the finals of VALORANT Champions 2022.
