G2 Esports Win LEC 2023 Winter

G2 Esports win the organization's 10th LEC title
by Tit Krajnik on February 26, 2023

With a 3-0 sweep against MAD Lions on Sunday, February 26, G2 Esports won the League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC) 2023 2023 Winter title. With that, G2 Esports won its 10th LEC title and solidified itself as the most successful team in the European League of Legends history.

The LEC 2023 Winter split concluded on Sunday, February 26, with a one-sided G2 Esports victory over MAD Lions, earning the Spanish esports organization its 10th LEC title. But the team's road to the top wasn't as smooth as they made it seem. Despite being the leading favourites heading into the newly-introduced Winter Split, G2 Esports had a bumpy road through the regular season, winning just six of nine series.

However, after finishing the season in fourth place, behind SK Gaming, MAD Lions, and Team Vitality, G2 Esports shifted into a higher gear in the split's final stage. With a perfect run through LEC 2023 Winter Group Stage, beating Team BDS (2-1) and MAD Lions (2-0), G2 earned an upper seed for the playoffs, where they met with KOI (former Rogue).

But even when faced with one of Europe's top teams, G2 Esports showed up and locked in a spot in the finals with a commanding 3-1 victory. In the grand finals, G2 Esports reunited with MAD Lions, who completed their lower-bracket run with wins against SK Gaming (3-2) and KOI (3-1), yet despite their strong showings, MAD Lions proved no match for Rasmus "Caps" Winther and co.

G2 Esports needed just south of 53 minutes to win the first two maps of the best-of-five series, and while they had to dig deep to close out the finals, 41:29 was all it took for G2 Esports to seal the deal and lock in another LEC title.

G2 Esports' incredible LEC 2023 Winter Split run follows a major roster overhaul. Before the season started, the team parted ways with jungler Marcin "Jankos" Jankowski, ADC Victor "Flakked" Lirola, and support Raphael "Targamas" Crabbé, who got replaced by Martin "Yike" Sundelin, Steven "Hans sama" Liv, and Mihael "Mikyx" Mehle.

G2 Esports' LoL team's success continues the organization's dominant run in the esports world, having already won a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament, IEM Katowice 2023, and a Rainbow Six Siege's Six Invitational. With that, G2 won three major esports events in just over three weekends, producing an incredible start to a new year.

The LEC 2023 season continues with LEC 2023 Spring Split, slated to kick off on March 11.
