Sprout Bench Refrezh In Favour Of Zyphon

Sprout bring back a former player to replace refrezh
by Tit Krajnik on February 28, 2023

On Tuesday, February 28, Sprout announced the benching of Ismail "refrezh" Ali, who will get replaced by Rasmus "Zyphon" Nordgfoss. The roster change sees Zyphon return to the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive roster after spending the last three weeks sidelined.

Refrezh's benching comes amid a series of changes in Sprout, which started three weeks ago, with the benching of Zyphon and refrezh moving away from the in-game leader role. The German CS:GO squad has since played with Mikkel "Maze" Sparvath, who served as the team in-game leader but did not receive a contract after his trial ended.

Now, in the latest wave of roster changes, Sprout moves back to the old roster, with Zyphon returning to the active lineup. The Dane joined Sprout in August 2022 and remained a part of the active lineup until February 8, when he was moved to the sidelines for three weeks.

Meanwhile, refrezh joined the team at the same time as Zyphon and initially served as an in-game leader. He impressed with his leadership skills and helped Sprout claim the IEM Rio Major Legends Stage invite by beating B8, Team Spirit, and forZe, earning the German team their best Major placement in the organization's history.

However, Sprout failed to achieve much since and tried to fix the issues by moving refrezh away from the IGL role within the team, but success was hard to come by. Over the next months, Sprout suffered early eliminations from many big events, including IEM Katowice 2023 and IEM Rio 2023 closed qualifiers,

Most recently, Sprout played with Maze as a stand-in but could only manage seventh-eighth, and ninth-16th place finishes at CCT Central Europe Malta Finals and CCT West Europe Series #1 at the end of February.

With the return of Zyphon, who was confirmed to return to the active lineup, Sprout still need to find a new in-game leader ahead of the RMR registration. Otherwise, the German squad will have to again play with their head coach Danny "BERRY" Kruger as their fifth.
