It wouldn’t be his first rodeo
by Joe Wilcock on March 02, 2023

Rapper and actor 50 Cent has baffled fans with a cryptic tweet that may hint at his involvement in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI game. On Wednesday, the multi-platinum artist shared an image on Instagram of the iconic Vice City artwork from GTA: Vice City, one of the most beloved entries in the franchise, along with the caption "I will explain later, GLG (GreenLightGang) this shit bigger than POWER trust me. BOOM”

The post has since gone viral, prompting fans to speculate that 50 Cent may be lending his voice and likeness or maybe his musical talents to GTA VI, which has not been officially announced but is widely anticipated by gamers.

The Grand Theft Auto franchise, developed by Rockstar Games, is one of the most successful and controversial in video game history. The open-world games allow players to engage in a wide range of criminal activities, from stealing cars to carrying out heists and murders, while navigating a satirical version of American cities. The series has sold over 350 million copies since its inception in 1997 and has generated billions of dollars in revenue, making it one of the most profitable entertainment franchises of all time.

The series is synonymous with its innovative gameplay, immersive worlds, and biting social commentary, but have also been criticized for its violence, misogyny, and glorification of crime. As The Guardian wrote in a 2018 article, "the GTA franchise has become so entrenched in popular culture that it's difficult to imagine the gaming world without it.". It is truly gaming's twisted poster child.

Believe it or not, 50 Cent, is no stranger to the world of video games. He previously starred in his own games 50 Cent: Bulletproof which was released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox consoles selling over a million copies in the process. He would return for the sequel, Blood on the Sand, in the era of celebrity-centric video games.

As of yet, neither 50 Cent nor Rockstar Games have confirmed or denied the rumours of his involvement in GTA VI. However, fans are eagerly anticipating any news about the next instalment in the series, which has not seen a new release since 2013's GTA V.

Despite Rockstar's resolute silence regarding GTA VI, there have been enough leaks and rumours to give us an idea of what the sequel might entail. One of the most consistent rumours about GTA VI is that it will have a new setting, possibly based on South America or Vice City, the fictional version of Miami that appeared in GTA Vice City. This rumour has been fueled by various clues, such as the inclusion of a Vice City reference in the latest GTA Online update, or the alleged leaks from a former Rockstar employee who claimed that the game was in development in 2018. Some fans and critics have welcomed the idea of a new location that would offer fresh perspectives and challenges, while others have expressed concerns about the potential cultural sensitivity issues or the lack of innovation. As journalist Jason Schreier commented in a tweet, "I'm excited for GTA VI, but I hope it's more than just a new map. Red Dead Redemption 2 proved Rockstar can do a lot more than that."

Another rumour that has gained traction is that GTA VI will feature multiple playable protagonists, as was the case in GTA V. This was sparked by a job listing by Rockstar in 2020, which stated that the company was looking for a "Combat designer to create and implement action-packed missions and gameplay for multiple playable characters”. If the conjecture is to be believed, one of the playable characters could be a franchise first; a playable female protagonist.

50 Cent has undoubtedly stoked the fire once more, but fans must wait a while longer before hearing anything concrete about GTA VI.
