At last, PlayStation achieves peak communication and intriguing upgrades

The PlayStation 5's latest 7.0 update has officially begun rolling out to users, bringing with it a host of new features and improvements. One of the most anticipated features is the integration of popular communication platform, Discord, which was previously tested in beta.

With Discord integration, PS5 users can now enjoy voice chats across hardware platforms and Share Screen functionality, opening up more opportunities for gaming and socializing. This move is part of Sony's strategy to make the PS5 a more social and connected experience.

Another significant feature is the support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) at 1440p resolution, allowing for smoother visual performance when using a VRR-compatible HDMI 2.1 display. This feature will only work if a game supports VRR, but it's a welcome addition for those with the necessary setup.

The update also includes several smaller quality-of-life improvements. For example, users can now migrate saved data more easily between PS4 and PS5, and transfer data between two PS5 consoles. There are also improvements to the screen reader and wireless device updates for the DualSense controller.

One particularly interesting addition is a limited release of a new game capture feature in the US and UK. This feature allows users to save clips of their gameplay using voice commands like "Hey PlayStation, capture that" or "Hey PlayStation, start recording." Users can also save a specific duration of gameplay, from 15 seconds to 60 minutes, simply by asking their console to capture a specific amount of footage.

The 7.0 update is a 1.1GB download, and it arrives at an exciting time for Sony and the PlayStation brand. According to PlayStation boss Jim Ryan, the PS5 stock shortage is effectively over, and more than 30 million units have been sold globally as of December 2022. The launch of PlayStation VR 2 in February also generated significant buzz, and 2023 promises to be a big year with the upcoming launch of Final Fantasy XVI in June and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 later in the year.
