Capcom Discusses Bringing Back Ethan Winters For Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil Village producer Peter Fabiano has spoken about the decision to bring Ethan back for the horror game.
by Luke Luby on February 18, 2021

The Resident Evil franchise has been known to change the protagonist with the majority of its instalments. While most appeared in the first game, they've tended to switch between Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Ethan Winters, and others as the main character with each new game. However, Resident Evil Village is changing that by bringing back Ethan Winters as its protagonist after having already done so with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.

While Chris is also returning for the game, many fans were somewhat surprised that Ethan is a protagonist, even if the news was positively received. A lot of this had to do with the ending of Biohazard, as fans of the game wanted to know more about the character and his wife following the events of the game. As it turns out, Capcom had a similar interest, as producer Peter Fabiano noted in an interview.

The way he tells it, the studio had become attached to the character and wanted to do more with him. However, it wasn't possible to do more on Biohazard at the time. Naturally, they decided to make him one of the primary protagonists in Village, alongside Chris Redfield. As Mr. Fabiano says:

“Concepting and planning was something going through our developers’ minds since towards the end of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The team grew quite attached to Ethan as a character so we knew we wanted to continue his story arc. We wanted to continue to have players experience the game through the eyes of protagonist Ethan Winters. This is a continuation of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard after all."

The producer added that this helped considerably with the game's early development, as it allowed Capcom to keep its vision focused early on. Fans of the franchise seem happy with the decision to continue Ethan Winters' story in Resident Evil Village, especially when a nine-foot-tall gothic vampire lady is one of the central antagonists.
