Blizzard Targets Four-DPS Meta in WoW Dragonflight with Update

Who needs a healer?
by Tit Krajnik on April 09, 2023

World of Warcraft Dragonflight got off to a solid start, with most players enjoying the changes that came with the latest expansion. But things changed following the Paladin rework, which not only affected the PvP meta but also made healers essentially obsolete in Mythic+ dungeons.

With any WoW expansions, the players constantly look for new ways to play the game to find the optimal strategy to achieve the best results. And as unusual as the strategies might be, sometimes even the strangest approaches work.

Recently, WoW players figured out that you don’t need a healer to complete high-level Mythic+ keys and can replace it with another DPS, which cuts down the time needed to complete the dungeon. The meta that first saw the light of day a couple of weeks back even debuted at the Mythic Dungeon Invitational, where teams opted to field a four-DPS composition, relying on durable damage specs and a Protection Paladin as a Tank role.

Largely thanks to the Paladin rework, Protection Paladins have succeeded as a viable replacement for dedicated healers, mainly due to their Hand of the Protector ability, increasing the healing done by Word of Glory – up to 250% of the target’s missing health.

But it was not only in the MDI that we saw the four-DPS composition achieve success. Earlier last week, a group of players from the guild “Twitch Primeates” completed a +28 Court of Stars keystone, relying on DPS and self-sustain of Shadow Priest, Enhancement Shaman, Havoc Demon Hunter, and Mindwalker Monk + a Protection Paladin to record a top-50 run of the season.

However, while paladins have had their chance to shine and completely change the WoW meta, Blizzard intends to introduce major changes on April 11 and 12 to address the four DPS meta and make dedicated healers a viable addition to Mythic+ keys.

In addition to nerfing Protection Paladin’s healing, Blizzard also intends to buff a few healing specialisations, including Discipline Priest and Preservation Evokers, who will be hit with major buffs. On the other side, Blizzard will tune down Restoration Shaman, which has proven to be the most effective healing spec in PvP and PvE since the last update.

The combination of nerfs to Protection Paladins and buffs to healing specs should help remove the four-DPS meta and re-introduce a healer as an optimal fifth man in any Mythic+ dungeon. But whether Blizzard’s changes will lead to the desired outcome remains to be seen, as it’s fair to feel a bit sceptical about the promises following the chaos caused by the lastest patches.
