Tekken 8 Cross-Play Confirmed

Tekken 8 will come with long-awaited cross-play.
by Tit Krajnik on April 09, 2023

As confirmed by Tekken game director and producer Katsuhiro Harada, Tekken 8 will support cross-platform play.

Tekken 8 doesn't yet have a confirmed release date, with some speculating it could be released in late 2023 or early 2024. However, while we're still months away from the game going live, the game director Katsuhiro Harada took to Twitter to answer fan questions about the long-awaited fighting game.

Among all the answers, Harada also confirmed that he had been pushing for cross-platform play in Tekken since the previous generation consoles were released – likely referring to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. But at the time, Microsoft and Sony didn't come to an agreement, which Harada speculates was due to security issues.

In the following Tweet, Harada explained that although Microsoft and Sony said to be supportive of cross-play, it wasn't as straightforward for third-party games. This has since been made easier, but there are still some obstacles.

"Remember when they announced they were open to cross-play a few years ago?," said Harada.

"But in reality, they didn't actively support third parties at the time, and the hurdles were actually quite high. There are still some problems left, but it will be possible."

Moreover, Harada has not confirmed whether the cross-platform play will be available at launch, so the feature may be added to the game with a later update.

Rollback netcode and cross-platform play are must-have features for any fighting game nowadays. However, Harada explained that they don't intend to make any big announcements because people might not accept it well and consider it something every game has available today.

Announced in 2018 for PC and next-gen consoles, the eighth iteration of Tekken is said to be built from the ground up to support next-gen platforms and will supposedly use Epic Unreal Engine 5. Besides that, many details are still missing, but in other news, Leroy Smith and Asuka Kazama have been confirmed as playable characters via their gameplay trailers.
